I want to install WebCard as part of a main site. Do I create a subdirectory and install WebCard in it, then link to it from the main site?
If so, do I install the main site first?
What is a recommended card size?

You should install your main website first.
You do need to install WebCards in a separate folder to your main site. For example "ecards" or "webcards" would be good examples.
Then you should link from your main website to your WebCards folder.

This really helps, thank you so much. Oh, please, you did not tell me about the size of the cards. Can you tell me what card size you use in your demos?

In the demo I set the thumbnailos to be 150 pixels wide and leave the height blank so they are resized in proportion.
The main images are various sizes but I tend to keep them below 500 pixels wide to prevent the need for horizontal scrollbars.
