Search Engine Friendly URL Format

    Hi.

I just installed v2.2 and so far I am loving it, thanks!

When I first selected "Use Friendly URL Format?" the alert told me to add an .htaccess file, which I did.

After adding the .htaccess file and clicking 'Update Configuration' again, it says it was successfully updated, but the file remains an empty O byte file and I get 404 errors when clicking on the image or link with the new SEO friendly URL. I thought it was a permission problem with the .htaccess file but that wasn't it (it's readable, writable and executable by all).

My second question (or comment): The friendly URL would be MUCH friendlier to search engines if it was moved up a directory level, so the URL looked like: YourDomain.com/file-name/ rather than YourDomain.com/postcards/images/file-name|1

Is there a way to reconfigure that URL so that it is simpler?

Thanks! I really like the app so far.

You don't need to upload any .htaccess file, it has to be the one that comes in the zipped archive. Upload that and see if the friendly URLs work properly.

As for the reconfiguring paths, let me take a look at it and see what I can do.

Ahhhh....on a Mac, .htaccess files are invisible unless you go "COMMANDo", and most Mac users aren't willing (or able) to use a command line prompt. I booted up the PC and was able to make it work, thanks.

From an SEO stand-point, if you could get the re-write to go to the root-level, it would make all the difference in the world, so thanks for looking into it.

Search engines don't like to go too many levels/directories deep (more than 2).

As a seasoned SEO guy, I'm not sure the pipe|number is a good solution...never seen it done that way before so I cannot comment on the SEO (de)value, I'm just puttin' it out there for consideration.

Anyway, thanks for the prompt response and for the quick support!

I didn't realise about the .htaccess file being hidden. I will ensure that this is not an issue in the future.

The URLs include the number so you don't have to worry about the title of the image being unique. For example if you uploaded 2 images both called "waterfall" one would be accessed with the URL http://www.example.com/image/waterfall|20 and the other with http://www.example.com/image/waterfall|21.

I am not too sure about the SEO impacts of this. I can look into it and paerhaps replace the pipes with a hyphen.
